this is entirely for show- but in the older days, it was required by the bar owner who required them to tap the shot glass on the bar to alert him that they were drinking

where i live everybody taps the glass on the bar or table before taking a shot. i have no idea why but i never question a free shot.

Interesting. I do think it has historical roots as perhaps a signal to watch the bartender actually pour the alcohol so that noone thinks a different liquid was being poured.

just to say to everybody out there (esp to the bartender) that they will take their shot. so that the bartender will ask them if they want another shot.

They are drinking a Tequila Slammer most likely. The drink is mixed as it is being slammed. Not a bad shot...old school.

I don't know about bartenders but Germans do it and say Proste, it is like a toaste.

the sissys make sure it slosis out and they don;t have to drink so much...... no I'm not sure
