Do I have to claim it for 2006 or 07? Please no guesses. Doesn't everyone have to fill out W2? I called and the University said they don't "do that sort of thing".

Thanks 2 all. FYI I did call IRS. 1040 ES, Schedule (C) SE and self emplyee forms are what I need in my case. IRS site was helpful. File in year paid, not worked.

You do not fill out a W-2 for contract work. You fill out a W-9 form.
If it was under a certain amount then the "employer" is not required to give you a 1099 at the end of the year. You would file in 2007 before April15th for 2006 wages earned.
www.irs.gov has some pretty useful information on this and other subjects.

If you're doing contract work, you would not fill out a W-4 and receive a W-2. Instead you'd fill out a W-9, and receive a 1099.

If you're not a corporation, you are most likely on a calendar year as your tax year, but the year the checks are dated is the year you'd be paying the taxes for, so from what you say, that would be 2007 tax year (the one you'll file it in 2008).

When you say the University said they "don't do that sort of thing", were they talking about having contract employees? I'd talk to the person who hired you and ask.

Wartz is sweet. you do no longer fill out the W-2 the corporate does that. That brings up the subsequent question. What became the character of your relationship with the corporation proprietor? in reality it comes all the way down to, have been you dealt with as an emplyee of the business enterprise, or have been you extremely an outdoors contractor. i could advise staring at IRS pub 17 to get a experience for which one you extremely have been. How they paid you is extremely beside the point. If the data advise you have been an worker then you definitely ought to get a W-2, yet once you extremely have been self reliant then a 1099-MISC must be issued to you. oftentimes the corporation proprietor will want you to be a 1099 individual extremely than a W-2 worker. That way it saves them on Soc. Sec., Medicare, FUTA, SUTA, W/Comp, and so on.. extremely, if the two one in all you may agree on what "status" you're then it will be genuinely beside the point to the IRS which you're.

You report it in the year you receive the cash, so you don't report it as income until 2007.
