What is God's name?

Question

Humans all have personal names. Why, many people even name their pets! Would it not be reasonable for God to have a name? Having and using personal names is unquestionably a vital part of human relationships and interactions. Should it be different when it comes to our relationship with God? Ironically, millions who profess faith in the God of the Bible do not use his personal name. Yet, God's name has been known for centuries. What about today? Has the name of God been forgotten?

It's not the same thing. When people give different names to God, the names come with concepts. For example: Hinduism can be interpreted as monotheistic (in a way). But Christians would not worship Vishnu. The name has concpets attached that Christians, Jews, and Moslems don't agree with.

Notice that in the Old Testiment, when the voice told Moses to tell the Pharoah to let his people go, he asked: "Which God should I say sent me?" The voice said "Yahweh." That's a verb in Hebrew. It means simply "to be."

I agree w/ther person who had the list : ) of names. Has anyone ever met God that is still around to talk about it? Or even write about it?

My opinion is...I do believe in a God just from what I have learned and experienced in life. Believe me there was a time where I questioned God's existance. Now the details revolving around religion or the details of our God to me...are unclear. Most of the evidence appears to me to be man made... So I don't believe there is one answer. I am leaving that dept. open until the day I meet him. (or come to more understanding....) I would have to say the same for our God's name.

God's name in English is YHWH. We don't know the vowels. The vowels of Adonai were added to YHWH about 800 years ago (by mistake) and eventually the name came to be in English, Jehovah.

Yes, God has a name but we're not exactly sure what it is. We call him Jehovah or Yahweh, and that identifies him. But it is not actually his name and if we pick one or the other (Jehovah or Yahweh) and say that THAT name is God's name, then we aren't really speaking the truth. If it were important for us to know, He would have preserved it for us.

The names of God that are actually written in the Holy Bible in the original writings expressed the nature, character and person of God to His chosen people. In the translations these names have been condensed to God and Lord.

I do not call my earthly father by his given name and so I do not call God the Father by his known name.

Another consideration is that the various names (Jehovah, Yaweh, etc.) are for our own human understanding because we cannot fathom the enormity of God.

Yeah Gods don't like it when you don't even address them by their name. It's kind of rude, like someone calling you "hey you" all the time. The God of the bible's name is YHVH.
