Hades is the Lord of the Dead. He rules the Greek/Roman underworld, which originally, was where the living went after death ( the House of Hades). It's not a good or bad place, just kind of gloomy.
Hell, on the other hand, is the Underworld of monotheistic religions. It is a place were wicked/evil/unrepentant people go after death. Depending on teachings, hell can be fiery or cold as ice.

In the Christian Greek Scriptures (the so-called "New Testament") of the bible, the Greek word "Hades" is used as a direct synonym for the Hebrew word "Sheol" (as used in the so-called "Old Testament"). Both terms are translated as "hell" in the King James Version, which must have seemed appropriate in 1611 since the English word "hell" at the time simply meant "underground". Farmers today still occasionally refer to "helling" (or "burying") potatoes.
None of the bible terms "Hades", "Sheol", or "hell" ever indicate a fiery place of torture. Instead, all three terms refer to the common grave of mankind, the state of being dead. There is no suffering in "hell", or the grave. Sometime after the resurrection, death and "hell" will themselves be destroyed.
(Ecclesiastes 9:5) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all
(Ecclesiastes 9:10) there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol ["hell"]
(Revelation 20:14) And death and Hades ["hell"] were hurled into the lake of fire

Hades was a god, akin to saint peter who decided which afterlife you went to, the elysian fields or the torments, hell would have been equitable with the torments
