My husband and I recently moved to Germany and have both noticed that when we drink beer we get very irritable. We notice the effect after only 1/2 a beer. Wine has no effect on either of us. We are happy enjoying the great French and Italians wines but it seems kinda silly to be here in Germany and unable to enjoy the beer.

You could be reacting to the wheat or hops in the beer: German beer has different formulations from American beer. Many people have mild allergies to these ingredients, and often one side effect of the allergic reaction is irritability. Notice next time you drink a German beer, do your cheeks and/or neck become flushed? Does your skin start to itch or your eyes water? Do you experience bloating? You may have an allergy. Or better yet, skip the beer altogether and enjoy the French and Italian wines that are also readily available. Best of luck!

It could be the way it is processed in Germany, also beer, like any alcoholic beverage, is a depressant so my suggestion would be stick with the wine...

Alcohol exaggerates whatever emotion you are feeling at the time. You are probably drinking the beer when you are bored so you get irritable. Lay off the sauce for a while.

Scientifically, I don't know. But from experience, yes. I have food allergies and one of my main allergens is yeast - but I love beer. So, I dose up on my best antihistamine and drink away.
