If you want to go fastest, get a road bike. Skinny, high pressure tires, more aero position, built for speed. I don't like road bikes in town so much though, because the riding position makes it a little harder to look around. And riding around town you want to look around. So look at hybrids that are built for speed. Specialized has a good line of these called Cirrus or something like that. A little on the pricey side, though. All the major manufacturers have more performance-oriented hybrids.

It depends on how bike friendly your town is. If you ride on nice smooth pavement all the way, then a road bike is most efficient. In my town, roads are busy, narrow, and most have no shoulders. I ride on the road for a while, sometimes have to dodge off into the grass for a while, then hop up on curbs or make transitions onto rough areas. I prefer a hardtail mountain bike with hybrid tires for getting around town.

Not sure what your budget is but take a look at these bikes. Trek calls them "Urban". They are basically road bikes with flat handlebars and stronger rims. I think Specialized and Giant also make bikes similar to these models.

If your budget is tight you could look for a used road bike on eBay or even craigslist.com. I picked up a road bike on eBay that was about a year old with very few miles on it for less than half of the sticker price.

Good luck with your search.
