If you want to know everything that dogs do then be prepared to write a book and not an essay. The list is too long to answer here. Its everything from giving a paw to mountain rescue to leading the blind to hearing for the deaf. I could write for hours.

Service dogs not only assist the blind, deaf and elderly, but also people with epilepsy and children with autism.
Also, remember sled dogs. In Alaska in the 1920's a team of sled dogs saved the population of Nome by racing to pick up medicine 1,000 miles away and returning in record time. Here's a link with more info http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/sleddogs/balto.html

Well, some dogs are seeing eye dogs, some are in dog shows, some are just home pets that get the newspaper, when you tell them to sit they sit. Some dogs are police dogs, some are firefighter dogs, and some dogs sled dogs, that race in the snow. Some are just dogs.
There are many things dogs do. All dogs are different. Some are made to be a police dogs and some are made to be in dog shows and some are just house dogs.

Service dogs: assist the blind and deaf, search and rescue, etc.
Dog owners are known to have reduced stress levels.
Some dog owners take their pets to retirement homes, nursing homes, rehab facilities (for people with brain and spinal cord injuries, for instance) and schools/homes for the severely mentally disable with therapeutic results.
They alert owners to intruders, noises outside, etc.
