Here's the situation. My mom co-signed for my car two years ago. The title is in my name, the registration was put in her name, so she could insure the car for me. I just moved out of N.J. to Maryland. Now I have to register the car and get insurance in my name. What do I do? I have to get it done very soon, the registration expires on the 31st.

First, if f the car is titled and registered in New Jersey now. Having the title in one name and the registration in another name is impossible!! The title could have both names on it, but the registration would only have the first owner on it. So, if indeed the title is in your name, it is your car and you can title and register it in any state, as long as you have the title. You said your mom co-signed for you. Do you have a lien on the car?? If there is a lien on the car, then in NJ, the bank has the title. You may not be aware that her name is first on the title. If there is still a lien on the car, you will need the leinholders permission to either switch names to make yours first, or just have your name only on the car, or pay it off and get the title. Most lending companies will NOT release the title to you unless it is completely paid off. But they will release it to a DMV in a different state. Which will give you the opportunity to title and register it in a different state. You will not be able to change the names on the title unless you have the banks permission to do so. If a bank or lending institution has the title, check with them or ask them for a copy of the title. You can ask them then for permission to make any changes you need to. The copy will not let you register the car in a different state, but it will show you what names are on the title.
If your NJ registration expires on the 31st, you may have to renew it and then make the changes in the title.

The title is in your name...its your car. When you register a car in a new state, they ask for the TITLE not the registration. You will be fine...just go to the DMV and register it.

You will have to have the title in your name to register it or it will have to be registered in her name.

i might preserve it the comparable as in case you have been the two contained in the comparable state. You sign the identify over to her & mail it to her. She takes the identify over to DMV and registers the motor vehicle the place she is at. In my state in case you provide, pass, a automobile to a family member, there is not any tax in touch. of path your mom ought to first have automobile assurance.
