It goes like this:

You: "How much do you want for this?"
Vendor: "1000B. Very cheap price"
You: Put it back on the shelf, "Sorry, too much"
Vendor: "I give you discount - 900B"
You: "No, too much"
Vendor: "How much you want?"
You: "Sorry, too expensive"
Vendor: "Last price - I give you 850"
You: "I'll give you 400"
Vendor: "Crazy price - I go broke. 800"
You: "450"
Vendor: "750 - last price"
You: "ok, ok - 500"
Vendor: "you crazy man - 700 and I don't eat for a week"
You: "550, buy yourself some dinner"
Vendor: "You make me very sad, 650 because you are my lucky customer"
You: "Here's 600B", as you walk towards the door (make sure you have change)
Vendor: "ok, ok....but I lose money on this"

Result:

You got 400B discount
He ripped you off

Both parties happy.

Every one has their own style. I am not one to bargain too much cause some of the prices are so low. I can be hard of hearing of low tones at times. I was buying a lighter to use around Bangkok and I asked her how much and she muttered it. So, I repeated it to her to confirm what I had heard and the tone I used was part in disbelief and part just making sure. Then she dropped the price 25 to 50 baht from what she first quoted me. This has happened a couple times for me. It's pretty funny.

Just don't be so anxious to buy. Always be willing to walk away from something you can get elsewhere.

Good luck

it helps if you use thai to bargain. my cousin who's thai says i always manage to get a better deal when i use thai as compared to when she bargains. this is probably because as a foreigner, i am taking effort to use their language and they appreciate the gesture. or it may be likely that my pronounciation is so funny that the sellers give me a discount for making them laugh!

bargain for half the price of the item...and be prepared to walk away if they don't agree because they will eventually accept your offer.

You must ask for a discount. Ask half of the price and say that the price is expensive. Then when the seller offers a price. Check and agree if you like and leave if you don't like.

the key to getting the price you want in thailand is to haggle. if the vendor gives you a price, immediately ask for a discount. if you are not familiar with the prices for the item you want, the techinique is to ask for half of what the vendor originally quoted you and work your way up.

First you should do your homework. Know the market, know the product, know the prices. Then you gotta be determined, say things like I'LL PAY (AMOUNT) AND NO MORE ... THERE IS NO SUCH PRICE...and stuff. Besides, find factors like unimportant defects to help you go down. And most important, be eloquent and talk them into it!
