My husband and I are going on a cruise the end of September and we have to get a pass port first. We have never been out of the coutry before so we have no clue how to go about getting one. We do know that we need ID and birth certificate to get one. Is there anything else I need to know about and how much do they run?

Call the post office. They are around $100. You can the photo taken anywhere. I had mine made at Walgreens.

The Post Office. This is the only place to get a passport. When you arrive you will need a birth certificate, drivers license, and passport pictures.

Passport pictures are small 3 by 3 pictures of yourself, "Headshots". You can make these at home or at any local drugstore with a photo section. Walgreens, longs, CVC, etc.

Expect to pay about $70. If you need the passport quicker then you can expedite the service for an extra fee.

When I got mine, I went to my town office to get an application. You fill out the application and get passport photos taken ( usually about $10). You'll need your birth certificate and maybe even your driver's license. I can't remember that part. Definitely the birth certificate though. You pay the fee and send out the application. My fee was $80 and that was two years ago. You then have to wait about 6-8 weeks for it to be processed and then you get your passport. The time it takes varies, but they usually tell you 6-8 weeks. If you need it sooner, you can have it expedited in 2 weeks, but it's twice as much money. The nice thing about them is that they're good for 10 years!
