I'm not asking about profanity here. I'm asking about swearing a oath. And usually people who are truly attempting to follow the teachings of Jesus ....refuse to swear an oath. ...on the Bible, ...on their mother's grave, ..to God ....... What do Muslims do? I realize that this is a very general question.

Let's first see what the Scripture says, (i am assuming you are talking about oaths and not cursing which we are not supposed to do)

[005:089] God will not punish you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for your deliberate oaths; for its expiation (a deliberate oath) feed ten Masâkîn (needy persons), on a scale of the average of that with which you feed your own families, or clothe them or manumit a slave. But whosoever cannot afford (that), then he should fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths when you have sworn. And protect your oaths (i.e. do not swear much). Thus God makes clear to you His Ayât (evidences, proofs, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) that you may be grateful.

Explanation
(V.5:89) Narrated Abu Hurairah [May God be pleased with him]: The Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] said, "We (Muslims) are the last (to come) in the world, but (will be) foremost on the Day of Resurrection." God's Messenger [Peace Be Upon Him] also said, "By God, if anyone of you insists on fulfilling an oath by which he may harm his family, he commits a greater sin in God's consideration than that of dissolving his oath and making its expiation with that which God has commanded." [Sahih Al-Bukhâri, 6624, 6625 (O.P.621)]

(V.5:89) It is better not to take oaths, but if you have taken it, and later you find a better solution for the problem, then act according to the better one and give expiation for the oath.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[002.224] And make not God's (Name) an excuse in your oaths against your doing good and acting piously, and making peace among mankind. And God is All-Hearer, All-Knower (i.e. do not swear much and if you have sworn against doing something good then give an expiation for the oath and do good).

So we can take oaths, but we should not take oaths against doing good deeds. And if we make false oaths then we will be called to account on the Day of Judgment.

God knows best

Peace Be With You

Yes we do have a prohibition against swearing and it is observed by Muslims. What that statement about swearing on the Quran means not swearing in a cursing sense but meaning taking an oath on the Quran.

Christians believe in the word of the bible so they swear on that, whilst Muslims believe in the word of the Quran, so they swear on that. All humans aren't saints, so all Muslims or Christians aren't staunch believers, so some people don't seriously swear on their Holy books

Yes. Moslems will get expecially irritated if you swear in front of them when they are fasting, which means during Ramadan.

Islam is very similar to both Christianity and Judaism.

The word swear was not referring to profanity.
