1) make sure the language packs for Chinese (simplified or traditional or both) are installed.
2) Download an IME (Chinese simplified or traditional or both) from microsoft.com (assuming that you are using windows - I dont know what you have to do for a Mac)
3) make sure that the language bar is enabled
4) when you have them properly installed, there should be a tab on the lanugage bar that has a EG (english). Click on it and it will give you an option for chinese
alternatively, you can go to njstar.com and download their word processor.
Regardless of which one you use, the input system is pinyin - the standardized chinese romanization.

You will need the proper software. There are a number of commerical programmes which translate Pinyin to English. 我 am using such a programme. MS Word is available in Chinese is you want to directly type in the characters. There is a conversion from ASDF keyboard to Chinese, but it is very complex.

you need a chines programe or use pinyin, ie nei ho.
