About 2 months ago my sister brought home an abandoned kitten. We took her to the vet that day and had all the tests run before we brought her home. But since then, my 14 year old cat started getting really red and irritated skin on her chin. Every day that goes by it gets worse. And the more I try to clean it, the worse it seems to get. I took her to the vet to get her teeth cleaned last week and asked them about her chin. They said it was feline acne and gave me some antibiotics to give her. I've barely seen a change in it. Could my little cat have given her something or is the little cat annoying my older one enough to be causing stress, thus causing the acne? The older cat has never had skin problems before and I feed them out of glass bowls that I clean very often. It seems to me like I need to put something topical on it, to help heal the scabs. Please help? Also, since the antibiotics, my older cat has had bad diarria. Is that normal? Thanks!

Change her eating bowl to stainless steel - it harbors less bacteria. Also, clean her food with soap and water before you serve any food in it. In other words, always serve her food in a clean bowl to make sure there's no bacteria. Meanwhile keep cleaning her chin.

Now that you've switched the bowls, the acne may clear up on its own. Just be sure to keep them clean, wash them at least once a week if not more frequently. Even though you're feeding dry food, eventually slobber will accumulate. I think that's what caused Sophie's acne, since I was feeding out of metal bowls at the time. All I did to get rid of it was to scrape it off with my fingernail and then swiped it with a wet cloth. Just water. I did that for a week or two in addition to washing the bowls more often, and it cleared up just fine. I too would hesitate to use anything on her chin area as it seems likely she'd ingest it at some point. But you could use a mild antibacterial soap to clean the area with - just be sure to rinse well!

Don't use plastic bowls. Use stainless steel and keep them very clean. Also, do some research on feline allergies. I recommend going to www.thecatsite.com, go to the forums and search acne, you'll find tons of helpful information.

Even human antibiotics commonly cause diarrhea, but constant diarrhea causes dehydration, so make sure she drinks plenty water. IF it continues for a few days, call the vet. I believe they make topicals for feline acne, ask the vet what your other options are.
