Use Meccano for the metal bits! Then add wires for the cables. I'm not quite sure how it would look, but it depends on what scale you are doing it in...

The most important aspects of a suspension bridge are the tower piers and anchors at each end. The cables are strictly in tension, thus the anchors have to resist the cable pulling out. This is usually done with a gravity anchor. A massive concrete structure with enought weight and thus enough friction to prevent the cable from moving.

The towers will be in compression, and thus are subject to buckling.

There is a national contest in Canada for Civil Engineering students called the Popsicle stick bridge competition. Teams build bridges with nothing more than toothpicks, Popsicle sticks, white glue and dental floss. Try using the floss for cables and Popsicle sticks glued together for the rest.
