A knife is the quickest and easiest weapon to learn. However because of the ease of use, it is also very difficult and dangerous to be involved in a knife fight where your attacker also has a knife.

In that case skill helps you certainly, but there is a larger than usual "lucky chance" because of the ease of use and deadlyness of such a weapon. Also the fact that many people involved in fights don't know there is a knife in play until it is too late.

I would check the penal law in your individual area (as you neglected to tell us where you are from and statutes vary from state to state).

If you get a CCW permit (again depending on the state) you could carry a firearm as another option.

However, you should fill in the gaps with unarmed fighting as a secondary focus as not all confrontations begin 50 yards away with a pre-arranged duel at dawn, and you are likely going to have to react first without a weapon and learn to be able to bring that weapon into play.

If you are going to carry a weapon you also need to learn the facts and the law about the ramifications of its use in self-defence. As a safe rule I would tell you not to draw it in any confrontation you can walk away from, but you need to research this more thouroughly and I would highly suggest you contact a criminal attorney in your state and pay for a consultation for more information.

You will have many answers. What you are looking for is legal advice. You need to check your local laws. Some states it's illegal to carry mace, some places it's legal to carry a knife of a certain size. I can not stress enough that you check your local laws. The one thing I do know is it is legal in most places to carry a walking cane (a slender piece of hardwood with a hook handle on the end). Learn to use it for defense and you are set. I think you can even carry it on a plane unless they've changed the laws.

Ther are many things you can carry that are legal but are not exactly weapons. A fishing weight sewn to the back of a baseball cap is very useful for stunning an attacker. A strip of strong cloth can be used as a sarong. There are always kubatons and the like for pressure points.

If you are going to carry a weapon you need to realize the only time you need to pull it out is if you are going to kill somwe body,
a gun is great if the attackers dont take it from you
mace is good if the wind is blowing, or its raining
tazers are great if they arent wearng potective clothes, you know crooks are getting prtty high tech these days. and as for keys they dont rip leather. everything has a draw back.

Tasers are legal in many states as is chemical mace.

Usually one of those large 2 foot maglights are nice to keep in your car.

I also bought a belt that is actually made from chromes motorcycle chains that can can be used for self defense

open hand bull? well if you cant fight to safe your skin, a weapon wont help. as soon as you are in trouble you will drop your nuts and cry anyway. you need experience to handle the fry pan boy.

and I believe the first answer is the best by far. a stone.

The answer to this question largely depends on which state, and municipality you reside in.

They're all different.

As a reccomendation, I would ask the local Police department, and ask which items fall into...as well as out of legal parameters.

the laws about that vary epending on where you are. Your best bet is to check the local city and state laws concerning weapons to find out. Most states have their penal codes on line.

Yes--a wooden cane, you could put a heavy steel handle on it--perfectly legal. To carry, that is, not to use. Be careful out there...
