Lice are highly contagious and can spread quickly from person to person, especially in group settings (schools, child-care centers, slumber parties, sports activities, camps, and even playgrounds).
Though they can't fly or jump, these tiny parasites have specially adapted claws that allow them to crawl and cling firmly to hair. They spread mainly through head-to-head contact, but sharing clothing, bed linens, combs, brushes, and hats can also help pass them along. Children and teens are most prone to catching lice because they tend to have close physical contact with each other and often share personal items.

as usual the general public is wrong--lice do not like dirty hair, because the oil on the hair makes it too hard for their eggs to stick to, as the eggs are attached to the hair strand near the scalp. So this is not a hygiene problem, don't feel that it is---HOWEVER, you DO have to wash all bedding items and put teddys in a garbage bag for a month, or they will come back. Go to the drug store and ask for lotion to kill the lice and follow the directions exactly, and repeat the process after 4 days to kill any lice that have hatched since the first treatment. If it is not repeated it WILL come back. And, spend hours and hours making sure all the eggs have been removed. It's a lot of work, good luck
