I often feel uncomfortable with using the word please at the end of a question especially if I use 'may I' or 'could I' at the beginning of it. I always say thankyou afterwards, but have always felt 'may I' to be an acceptable replacement for 'please.' Am I being rude?

A couple of you have told me to always say please, but I work in a supermarket and to say please after every single question I ask a customer (and there are usually quite a few) is tiring and frankly, annoying. I still don't see the problem with not always using it.

you know, i never noticed it before, but i do the same thing.

i think there is a time and place for "please" and a time for "may i". however, i said "may i please speak to your supervisor?" the other day when i called customer service.

i would go with your gut on this one.

It makes sense, in a series of questions, not to say please every time. You're correct - it would get annoying. "May I" followed with "Thank you" is fine as long as you say please one or two times during the course of the conversation.

Could I ask you a favor? Would you mind? Suggest what you want from them.

it's all in the tone of voice, if you are being polite then please can be omitted. Like you can say 'put your card through there, please!' with a mean souding or you can say the same thing in a pleasant, kind voice, even taking out the 'please' and it would sound better.

just imply it with a light fluctuation of the tone of your voice

There's no need to say please in every case. Sometimes when I say it, I feel like a small child.

It might make you look bad and it is very polite so I would do it.

Not all questions require the use of the word please.

For example: May I help you?

It would sound odd if you added please to it.

But, if you were asking for someone help, it would be better to say: "Could you please help me?" or "Could you help me please?"

So few people follow etiquette these days. Please, do say please. It's the right thing to do.
