My wife and I are going to Vieques (Puerto Rico) at the end of February. We are trying to decide on weather to fly or take a ferry. We are staying primarily in San juan but would be willing to drive to Fajardo for either method of getting to Vieques. Although I'd rather leave from San Juan for a quick flight to Vieques, my wife is scared of flying and wants to take a ferry.

I know the flights are more expensive ($45ish one way from San Juan) but the Ferries are only $2.00 from Fajardo.

Anyone have any experience with either of these methods of getting to Vieques? Is the low cost of the ferry worth driving to Fajardo? Is taking the ferry as much of a pain as I've heard it is?

The ferry is that cheap for a reason. Think about it, a 45min ferry ride for 2dollars, whereas most other things in PR are priced pretty accordingly. The boat is old and due to this, every wave that the ocean even thinks about, you feel. I do not have the strongest of stomachs but my girlfriend who was also on the boat and does things like skydiving, even got sick! If you believe us to be wimps, the boat is supplied with barf bags throughout and people are not surprised to see you vomit, its a normal thing for them to see us turistas like this! I would strongly suggest the plane if you do not want to throw up for 45min straight and then when you reach land feel too bad to enjoy it. I was scared to get on those little planes to but the ride is smooth (I've done it to and from vieques and san juan 8times), its quick, you can even copilot, and you see al of san juan, vieques, even can see st. thomas. If the cost of the ferry is appealing to you, get medication. Last but not least there is a boat that goes from san juan to vieques called aquaexpress but they have limited travel days and times and are closer to airline fares than two dollars.

we've been to Culebra a few times by Ferry and you need a stomach of steel, it does help to sit outside(away from deisal fumes) but the ride is not for a weak stomache(gravol recommended) it wasn't untill the last time we took a ferry ride over and then the ferry was canceled for three days due to the weather, we flew back to fajardo, it was an easy ride!!! if we were to do it again we would definately fly, for a couple of reasons
- no nausea gravol just makes me sleepy, and I wouldn't enjoy the beach anyhow
- it is much faster and you can enjoy more time on the beach
- the drive from San Juan to Fajardo can be excruciatingly long, it took us over 4 hours to get back once,.
that is just our experience I hope this helps in your decision!

Ferry is a nice ride. I took the ferry when the Airline I flew in on went out of business.

Have fun. Nice island. Beware of the sand fleas at the beach.

If I were you, I would take the ferry. It's not a cruise but it is inexpesive and nice. The water is beautiful and I'm sure your wife and you will enjoy it very much. But be careful because the ferry runs on a very tight schedule. You should find out what it is before you leave. have fun!

If you & your wife are use dto traveling by boat without having nausea or upset stomach go for it. The water are crystal clear and you will enojy it...

But if you think you will have nausea easily take the plane.
