what was your experience like in becoming a doctor?

The world of medicine is rapidly changing, and half of all graduating medical students are now female. So, in the near future, I think gender of the doctor will be less of an issue.

Your experience will largely depend on your location and the specific field you go into. In lots of places, there is no issue with being a female doctor. That being said, there are still places where medicine is a "boys club." Even in the best environments, be prepared to be called a nurse a million times over by patients.

Also the field plays a large role. About 75% of people going in ob/gyn now are female. Surgery, on the other hand, is still very male dominated. In fact, I heard a story in my community (in which the medical community is fairly liberal and accepting) that a surgery group that was all male said they wouldn't hire a female surgeon "until she handed over her uterus in a glass jar."

So, while I haven't had any particular problems, I think you should be prepared for some chauvinistic sentiments, though I think the environment is improving all the time...
