No Need. Pets are not like us they do not understand they just had surgery and need to take it easy. They need to feel the pain so they don't hurt themselves. In most cases a neuter is nothing. You will still have to make them take it easy.

Pain in animals is real. It is not fair or ethical to "let them suffer it out". I'm glad that you're concerned for your dog's welfare enough to consider pain management.
A neuter is a technically simple procedure, but it still involves an incision through very delicate pre-scrotal skin and removal of organs. The majority of the veterinary world has now come to recognize the need for mandatory pain control. It has been proven to speed healing time and reduce post-op complications from animals disrupting their incisions.
Most of the time, the pain medication used is Metacam (meloxicam). There is a human counterpart drug (Mobicox) that is used after orthopedic surgery. The majority of animals do very well on Metacam, especially young dogs that only take it for a few days. There are side effects to every drug, and if you have any concerns while your dog is on medication, you should contact your veterinary hospital right away.
I hope things go well for you on Friday. It's nice that you'll have the weekend to pamper your pup...

Here is what to do. He is whimpering because he is in pain. The medication only lessens the pain slightly.. they still feel a lot of pain. He was cut outside where you see his stitches and also inside, where they have used laser to stop bleeding and close up tubes. Please let your dog rest. Just let him be near you. if he wants to lay next to you let him. He is not looking for attention.. he is in PAIN. Have you looked and seen how swollen his scrotum is? It is really uncomfortable for him. You don't need to take him back to the vet. He is going to sleep a lot in the next few days. He will start to get back to himself in about 4 or 5 days. Be patient with him. The wound won't be healed properly on the inside for about 2 months, though the stitches will come off in about 10-14 days. If he has internal ones they should just dissolve. Do not let him lick the wound. I hope he has an e collar , if not get one from the vet and put it on him till his stiches come off. You don't want him to open the wound and have to go in to be stitched back up again. More money and more pain for him.

They do not need pain meds after a neuter. If vets give them, it is really for the OWNER! The dog will be just fine, and the side effects of the medication do not seem worht the hassle.
Really, dogs got neutered for EONS before they started getting pain med!!

The most commonly used pain meds are called NSAIDs- non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. Advil and aspirin are examples of human NSAIDs. In dogs, most vets use Rimadyl, Deramaxx, or Etogesic. They are very safe in young dogs, esp with short term use. As with any drug, you want to watch for any loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, and if these occur, stop the meds and call your vet immediately. I understand your concern, but it really is kinder for your dog to have a little pain relief for a few days after surgery. You can also ask your vet about the pain meds he or she uses. You are doing the right thing getting him neutered. Good Luck!!

When my 4 yr. old lab mix was neutered, he was given some either during or immediately after his surgery. He obviously didn't need it afterwards because the next morning, he was running around and jumping on and off the couch like a little spazz. They do tell you to not let them jump or run around, but that's hard to do to keep a 6 mo. old puppy from being themselves. Good luck!
