Say you had a boyfriend or girlfriend that is away at college away meaning 4,000 miles away and your best friend is up there too and hangs out with the same friends he/she hangs out with. Besides that, is it right to have your best friend look after him/her even though you know you can trust them, you just want to be extra careful when they are at partys and drinking. Is spying/looking after right?

In some ways it can be useful, but I follow a saying that I've heard from generations to generations it's actually said in spanish but for you I will translate. Eyes that can't see for them self then your heart shall not feel any heart ache. I know it sounds corny in english but it spanish it just all makes since.

I think that anyone could answer this by saying, "if you trust him you wouldn't feel like you have to 'be extra careful'" but I find it hard to believe that anyone your age could refrain from the urge to know what's going on by having a friend "look in" on him/her. How do you define trust? Listen to your instincts, talk to your partner, try to be rational and think things through before assuming the worst.

that isn't really spying

its totally ok

spying gets bad when paranoid suspicious people (and all spies are) start suspecting, finding nothing so they rely on 10th hand info that isn't reliable and construct fantasies about what somebody did or didn't do. Then the innocent people who are hiding nothing become the most persecuted. Especially when they have no problems with any ethnicity and can pretty much get along with anyone.

Spying will just drive you up the wall. Ignorance is bliss. You don't want to find out bad news, so you just might as well trust him.

it is neither good nor bad..it is just is

i would never play games like trying to tempt him with a friend

i would say being aware of what he is doing is protecting your own interest , but dont over do it .If he gives you reason to suspect cheating then spying is apropriate

remember what is good for the goose is good for the gnader as well

No - if you really trusted your partner you wouldn't do it. Maybe it would be better to talk to you partner about your fears than having a friend spy on him/her. It could all blow up in your face eventually.

no it shows a lack of trust. If you have to spy you arent in a healthy relationship.

Umm not really. You need to either straight up confront him or something. Spying inhibits distrust between couples.

You either trust... or not. Something has made you feel the need to have them watched. This is not healthy. If you can't trust your mate, without reservation; lose them.

If they are a good friend they will do it anyway, but if that friend also holds feelings secretively they could use it against you and take your relationship. It happened to my best friend to tread carefull on that one.
