in the bible? How do we "consencrate" ourselves today? I was speaking to a muslim man and he said that people must consecrate themselves before entering a mosque, when I asked him what that meant, he said that I wasn't a real christian if I didn't know the meaning. I didn't let his comment ruffle my feathers, but I keep seeing the phrase in the bible and I would like to know how concencrating is done. I think it has something to do with purifying yourself, but then how do you purify yourself? Thanx.

Everything you all said was great. You gave me the dictionary definitions, but how DO YOU DO IT? The Levites were set apart, but in Chronicles they consecrated themselves before they were able to sacrifice animals for the Hezekiah's temple. Did they pray or did they do a ritual? This is very vague to me. It's okay if you don't know either. Thanx

I think this is a very good question, one that I am curious about as well. Well the definition of consecrate is to make or declare sacred.
Just for an example...maybe a christian is or becomes sacred when they accept Jesus Christ as their savior. So then can we make or declare ourselves as people sacred.
I guess since everyone has their own and are entitled to their own beliefs, there are different beliefs on whether and how one can consecrate himself or herself.

Here is a Bible Dictionary. It will help you if you want to study specific words (getting Hebrew word and specific meaning). We all know that love in English has five different forms in the Bible, with Agape being the unconditional love of God. Happy studying!

Definition of the word Consecration
The devoting or setting apart of anything to the worship or service of God. The race of Abraham and the tribe of Levi were thus consecrated ( Ex. 13:2, 12, 15 ; Num. 3:12 ). The Hebrews devoted their fields and cattle, and sometimes the spoils of war, to the Lord ( Lev. 27:28, 29 ). According to the Mosaic law the first-born both of man and beast were consecrated to God.

Consecration is done only by believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We are all sinful but by believing Christ stands between God and us, then and only then are we deemed pure - or consecrated. Ask you Muslim friend if his god was man enough to die for him!!

Do you own a dictionary if not visit your local library. It means " to set apart as holy", "devote one self to religion" or to "declare as sacred" as in consecrated ground the site of a church etc.

To consecrate something is to set something apart, bless it, and reserve it for holy use.
