My husband and I have both had a very very difficult time sleeping over the course of the last few months since we've moved, and we're both constantly tired. I've been taking tylenol pm long-term, and the dosage just isn't helping anymore.

Do I just flat-out tell my doctor I want to try Ambien or another prescription sleep aid for a while, or will he or she only offer it after lots of tests and stuff are done?

bmac: research harder. Tylenol PM contains no antihistamine. Trust me. I have a medical condition that keeps me from being able to take several different kinds of OTC meds. I'm a stickler for reading EVERY WORD of the label.

Papeverso...(aka rant-girl): I should have clarified. I'm interested in finding out about prescription sleep meds because I've tried every natural or OTC thing I can find. Valarian does NOTHING for me.

Sorry, I get moody when I'm tired.

It depends wholly on the doctor. Most MDs are hesitant to jump right into sleeping medications. If they do, they may recommend a short course to start (ie. 7 days) . Considering your history with Tylenol PM, you may be a suitable candidate to try a precription medication (ie. Ambien, Ativan)

Remember you still need to be careful with Tylenol PM. Even though they state that you do not develop dependence on it, ANY sleep medication still carries that risk. I would recommend on continuing to focus on trying to go without any sleep medication by trying to take a night off once in a while and save the sleep medication, whether it is Tylenol PM or Ambien or Ativan, for days when you think you may really need it. Don't lose focus on this goal, or else you will be making more and more trips to the doc for refills!

Try 3mg Melatonin or Valeran Root or even some psudophedrine you can get them without a prescription at the health food store or your drug store) before messing with prescriptions.

Some prescriptions have some cooky side effects such as sleepwalking, sleep eating, sleep sex... Not cool!

and for the Soma girl down there... Keep your potential addiction suggestions to yourself and don't feel the need to share. Soma is one of the most addictive prescriptions out there and therefore sleep problams are not a good enough reason to start taking it as it is for pain! Be responsable and ask someone if they have addictive tendencies before you go suggesting that to anyone else!

I mean what the hell... Lithium will make you sleepy too... Hey how about you throw some Depakote in the mix too?
What's that you say? But you're not crazy?

Oh What the heck... if the effect is sleep just down some right?

See what I mean? It's not always a good idea to listen to people on here... That girl should be checked out by the FDA and possibly is in need of an intervention. Misery loves company huh?

Not to mention it is completely illegal to purchase prescription drugs without an actual prescription! Boy is she a genius or what?

You should just tell your doctor that you need a prescription sleep aid and he/she should prescribe the most suitable one to you. My fiancee just told his Dr that he was having trouble sleeping and the Dr wrote out a prescription for Lunesta. No tests were done.

Yes, your body has gotten used to the antihistamine in the Tylenol PM. Soon, it will start having the opposite effect--make you hyper.

Yes, just talk to your doctor. Ask him/her what they think would be best? Ambien, Rozerem, etc. Don't ask for something specific.....but do tell them you think it's situational and you won't need it for long. They will be much more inclined to give you something.

It depends on how well your doctor knows you. Did you tell him/her that you have been having sleeping issues? My sister had to go through all the tests before they prescribed her sleeping pills, but every doctor is different. Just tell him/her that you really need them. Good luck

Ask your doctor they might do it with out tests. But will probably want you to have a sleep apnea test done first.
