I have a golden retrv that is 1 1/2 yrs, and I have had him since a pup. He chases his tail, and when he catches it, he pulls fur out and eats it. His fur is not matted, and he doesn't appear to be pulling anything else out of it. I knew another golden who did the same thing. Is it just the breed?

My parents golden does this too. My dad jokes with the dog if they are watching a dog show. When they show the golden my dad says to the dog, "look at that dogs tail Riley, thats what its supposed to look like." They just keep it trimmed pretty close and try to stay on top of her when she starts chasing it. I guess they are trying to get her to forget about it. Goldens are great, but they do some weird things.

It's not the breed, my Golden has never chased her tail and ate the fur off of it. Check to see if he has flaky skin on his tail. It could be an irritation.

Try bathing him in Tegrin dandruff shampoo (it's worked WONDERS with my golden. She has allergies). Also check his food - Wheat is usually the #1 culprit for skin allergies.

He also needs to be brushed 2 times a day, this may help to alleviate the itching.

If all else fails, spray his tail down with bitter apple. But definitely talk to your vet.

Good Luck

It sounds like he may be board, try giving him something else to do besides chasing his tail. All dogs DO chase they're tail but to pull the hair off it's heard of but not normal. Give him a toy that will occupy him for a while.

it extremely is extraordinarily much consistently to do with hypersensitive reactions. you're able to desire to offer him a cone collar so he won't have the skill to chew on his sores anymore. Get the see-by variety... my canine have been given used to the collar in merely 3 days. attempt to work out if that's a yeast/fungal an infection, mites, or fleas on the vet (they are going to possibly take pores and skin scrapes and look below a microscope). they could then supply him pictures for secondary bacterial infections. make helpful those steps are taken so which you will no longer could desire to save guessing or finally end up with dissimilar problems at as quickly as. If it extremely is hypersensitive reactions you have have been given to alter to top class or prescription canine nutrition and anti-fungal or trouble-free shampoo. it extremely is regularly going to be a tribulation-and-errors element, such as human beings with hypersensitive reactions. do no longer supply up... upload: it extremely is not "merciless" to positioned on a cone collar esp. whilst there are already sores on the canine. it extremely is there to avert secondary bacterial infections and of course it extremely is not everlasting (positioned it on till the sores heal, DUH). some actually everyone seems to be merely impractical. i does no longer even permit my baby scratch an open sore. trouble-free experience.
