Hi Jim, good to see you're back.

Although the Bible doesn't really address scientific issues, it does make a statement which is informative regarding Evolution. It says that all life is created 'after its own kind'. And interesting enough, that's as far as we have been able to ascertain evolution's reach. Beyond 'kinds', we merely guess based on the changes we DO see. So in that sense, yes, the Bible does have one small criticism of Evolution. But all of that work is not wasted. Evolution also shows us how God likes to work. People say He is the God of the Coincidence, and to some extent, they are correct. Much if not all of what God does is performed by swinging the odds so far out of line you can almost hear them crack. I think that's pretty cool, myself.

No, the book of Genesis is not valid scientific criticism of the theory of evolution. Scientifically, it is on the same level as evolution. Both require faith.

Scientific criticism of evolution involves the fact that it is not a product of the Scientific Method. Further, specific known scientific principles, such as the fact that genetic mutation is almost always detrimental, is a proper criticism. Then, there is the fact that after 150 years of searching, nothing that can be described as a transitional form has been found. Another, how could mutually dependent species evolve at different times, and still survive?

What good were organs that were insufficiently evolved to function: eyes, wings, lungs & c. What organism did an "evolved" animal mate with? Why would a beneficial mutation (which is such a rarity, in itself) prevail through succeeding generations, until it chanced upon another "beneficially evolved" creature, and this highly unlikely procedure continue ad infinitum? What are the odds of something like that happening?

Why can't evolution be evoked in the laboratory, since it is the product of random chance in nature? Why is variation in species (a more resistant virus) referred to as mutation, when it falls within the parameters of the specie?

And finally, would anyone actually believe evolution, other than to explain the origin of life and species in the absence of God?

No.

Genesis was written long before modern conceptions of Science, and tells us more about ancient Israelite attitudes about the nature of God, and God's relationship with humanity than it does about anything scientific.

It is not reliable on issues of science, but it is a wonderful collection of myths and stories which form the basis of Judaism, Christianity, and to a degree, Islam--three of the major modern religions.

It also retains or borrows from earlier religious texts, such as the Epic of Giligamesh.

part of the scientific method is "hypothesize, observe." neither Creationism or Evolution can definitively say what happened at the origin of all this. Both sides can hypothesize and come up with theories, but it is a matter of faith. I have faith that God literally spoke the world into existence, while others have faith that billions of years ago events occurred that have slowly changed and changed again, leaving us in the present state we are in.
