Alcohol is a depressant. Aside from that, alcohol will often intensify feelings that you are having when you begin drinking. You should tread very lightly with drinking alcohol if your reaction is to be depressed or emotional on a consistent basis after even light drinking. I would suggest you consult with your doctor. MG

Alcohol is a depressant, and does have this effect. Are you also taking other medication which the alcohol could be exaggerating? All alcohol is a depressant and should be avoided if it makes you feel bad - but there are some types which tend to have different effects on different people - for example, bubbly drinks like champagne tend to make me far less depressed than something like gin or red wine. Don;t drink to excess, and try changing your regular tipple to something else, and see if it makes any difference.

I am the same I cant drink to much because it makes me depressed, it's annoying as I like to have a drink like you but you do learn to live with it, just have a drink on special occasions or when your going out with friends and try not to over do it because the more you drink the worse you get.

Alcohol is a depressant, you've heard that from almost everybody who's answered this question. You have also heard that alcohol affects everybody differently, this, however is incorrect. Alcohol does the exact same thing to everyone, what is different is how each individual responds to the effects of the drug. Alcohol is the most caustic chemical humans ingest and does more physical and emotional damage than any other drug. It is actually a poison to our body's and can kill after prolonged or excessive use. I hope you choose another drink to socialize with. Other people want to interact with your real personality, not one that's altered.

As stated, alcohol (ethanol) is a depressant. Everyone has a variety of chemical (neurotransmitters) in their brain. Drinking alcohol makes the neurotransmitter GABA come into "action" which is the major depressant neurotransmitter. It also inhibits (stops) the release of glutamate which is the main "excitory" neurotransmitter in the brain which would make you feel better, however alcohol stops this from happening. Best to steer clear of it altogether as you seem to be sensitive.

Male volunteers who drank alcohol under experimental conditions had a decrease in blood levels of tryptophan, and showed less tryptophan in their brain. Tryptophan levels are connected to levels of serotonin. Put simply, drinking alcohol has an immediate, short-term effect of reducing serotonin. Having low levels of serotonin is linked to depression.
Serotonin Selective Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs, like Prozac or citalopram) work by stopping the serotonin in the brain being taken up by cells, leaving it to act as a messenger on neurons for longer.
The reason that alcohol may decrease tryptophan is that it increases the activity of an enzyme in the liver, trytophan pyrrolase.

Alcohol is a depressant that's why! It is a common misconception that alcohol makes people feel better. You get a very temporary high, but his is very quickly replaced by low sinking feeling.

alcohol is a depressant and you don't have to drink when you go out with friends to be socialable. It is sometimes more fun to stay sober and watch everyone else drinking and making a fool of themselves, pluse you can be the designated driver, so there are really alot more positives to not drinking when you are out.

Alcohol is a depressant ,so do not indulge in any whatsoever. You can still be a very social person by drinking non-alcoholic drinks!!
No problems after the night before either.

Different people have different intolerances and sometimes the type of drink you choose can have a particular effect on you. I find I get rather weepy if I drink gin and tonic, bolshy on beer but happy and giggly on red wine, so now I just drink red wine. If you find all types affect you then just find a good non alcholic drink, you can still go out with your mates, have a good time and not have to suffer the next day!
