Most trainers will suggest doing weight training no more than every other day. Your muscles need a day of rest in order to recover and build. So if you lift weights on Monday, skip the weightlifting on Tuesday, then resume on Wednesday, etc... So in that regard, yes, it is good to give your body a day of rest and do it only every other day.
Cardiovascular exercise is something that you could do every day. It burns fat, conditions your heart and gets all the blood and cells pumping in the boday. Do this atleast 3 to 5 times a week to see the best results. Try to get in a good 30 - 45 minues daily. You could break it up in 3 mini workouts a day if you don't have a lot of stamina when you're just starting out.
Primarily with cardio, what you want to do is get your heart rate up, sweat, and huff and puff a little bit. Not to the point that you feel like you're going to keel over with exhaustion, but just enough to exert some energy. When first starting out, be careful not to overdo it.
It's best to do some stretching before and after you begin. This will help you to avoid getting as sore, and will help protect you from injury. Keeping your muscles nice and limber is good for body alignment too.
You don't necessarily need to join a gym to get fit, and you don't have to be an athlete, bodybuilder or a skinny minny to be healthy. Just try to do some moderate exercises throughout the week. If you have cable TV, you could exercise to one of the shows on FitTV.
In the beginning take it very slow. If you feel extremely winded, slow your pace until your heart rate goes down a bit. Try slowly walking in place or stepping side to side until you catch your breath.
It would probably be a good idea to see a doctor beforehand and tell him you plan to start an exercise program. He'll do a workup on you and make sure that your strong enough for it.
There are tons of pages on the internet dedicated to getting fit and healthy. Wether you decide to work out at home alone, or join a gym and get a buddy for motivation, you'll be doing something wonderful for yourself in getting nice and healthy.
Good luck and have fun. You're going to look and feel great very soon. :)

I personally don't believe that just knowing height and weight = blanket answer on whether someone is overweight or not. Most likely though, if you're 5'7 and 180 pounds and you have to ask.....you're probably a little overweight. Not too bad though. Here is the way to being a savage though. Run or bike 30 minutes every day. As far as weight training goes, lift 4-5 times a week......not more. You need at least two days to let your muscles grow. Lift one big muscle group with a smaller one Chest/triceps, Back/biceps, shoulders/abs, chest, Legs. There's your five days. Eat tons of protein...1 to 1.5 grams per pound of your weight per day. Be good on carbs too. Good carbs. Pasta, vegies etc. Good luck.

You can probably lose 15lbs but your not really overweight. Go however many times you want. If going 3x isnt enough, go 5x. However long you feel is necessary. But more than 30-45 min.

Depends on what you mean by "workout". Cardio workouts need to be done daily to achieve any benefit from them, your heart beats 365 a year, you need to support it every day.
Check for your body mass index to determine if you are overweight. See the following link.

I AM BY NO MEANS A FITNESS GURU BUT IF YOU FEEL OVERWEIGHT THEN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. WORK OUT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. 30MIN EVERY TIME YOU DO. OTHERS WILL SAY MORE MORE MORE BUT IF YOU PUT PRESSURE LIKE THAT ON YOURSELF YOU ARE BOUND TO FAIL. YOU ARE ALREADY ON THE RIGHT TRACK BY WANTING TO DO IT SO FOLLOW THRU AND GET ON IT. WHAT YOU EAT IS IMPORTANT. EAT WELL LIVE WELL BE HAPPY. GOOD LUCK
