From Abraham, it was prophesied that he would have a seed that would bless all nations. The Jews had 100's of prophecies pointing to the Messiah. Jesus fulfilled all the prophecies.
So yes, many believed in the Messiah before he was born. They knew he was coming. Others believed when they met him and still others after he died, which would include us today.

The Old Testament is full of prophecies of the coming Messiah. And when Jesus was born, He was the fulfillment of every one of those prophecies. If you cross-reference the prophecies of the OT with the earthly life and death of Jesus, you will see that Jesus is the true Son of God because nowhere is there a conflict between prophecy and reality.
There were those who thought someone else was Jesus (John the Baptist for example) and there were those who were only sure who Jesus was after He appeared to them after the crucifixion and resurrection. Those who want to deny Him today have nothing to use as their criteria. Only the direct hand of God could have orchestrated the writing of the Bible.

In some Jewish traditions, there was a hope for the coming of a Messiah, and many of the prophetic books express this longing and hope on behalf of that tradition.
During Jesus' ministry, there were claims that he was the Messiah. However, he was not the only person in that day and age with such a claim. There were lots of potential messiahs, lots of street preachers, lots of small movements.
Following Jesus' death and the claims of resurrection, many of the early Christians started making claims about Jesus' pre-existance (borrowing from Greek intellectual traditions) and also matching up his life with the claims of the prophet (the use of the virgin birth story in Matthew relies on a prophecy in Isaiah taken completely out of its context and re-interpreted, for example).
From that, many Christians argue that Jesus was the fulfillment of Jewish Messianic hope, that his life was pre-figured in the OT, and that he existed from the time of creation.
Maybe it's so, but these are all claims that rely on retrospect....

Jesus is a part of God and always has been. The people who lived before Jesus paid the price for our sins at Calvary were required to believe in Jehovah God.

The Jews, believed in and trusted a God they called I AM.. From the burning bush. When the rulers of the Law question Jesus' parentage he responded this way:
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM.
They knew that He was claiming to be God because they picked up rock to stone Him. So the answer to your question is Yes, they believed they just didn't see Him coming among them so humbly..

The only way anyone, ever has been saved from sin is through the person YAHOSHUA. His name means YHVH is my Savior. That is how Enoch was saved, and how Abraham was saved. We are told (Ex.23:13) not to use the names of pagan deities. (that would include Iesus- or Hail Zeus) There was no "J" until 1400A.D. so clearly there can be no "J" in the name of the Almighty or the Savior!!! Our hope is to be faithful to Scripture, which is the Word of YHVH in Much the same way that YAHOSHUA is the Word of YHVH!!! blessings!

It would have been very hard to believe in someone before his birth.
No, no one believed in Jesus before He was born. Most don't believe in Him after He was born.
Before Jesus' birth, the Jewish folk were waiting for the promised messiah. As far as I know, they are still waiting.
Too bad, they missed Him.

The Old Testament contains references to the holy trinity, so clearly some people did believe that God existed (or was going to exist) in more than just one form. Whether that counts as believing specifically in Jesus the son is another matter.
