If a cop has friends who smoke pot, he won't usually go out of his way to report them, but if they're disrespectful enough to dare take it out in front of him, he'll arrest them, sure.

For the most part, cops avoid friendships with people who are into drugs.

If he is on duty, then yes. He is required to report anyone who is breaking the law. Period. Showing favoritism is wrong, and it could get him/her into really serious trouble. It is a good way to become an EX-police officer in the unemployment line, that is for sure. A smart police officer would not be dumb enough to associate with people who smoke pot. I do not mean anything against people who smoke pot, mind you, but rather that being a good cop means being responsible and not putting themselves into a situation that will lead them to have to make such an ethical decision. It's just common sense. Most cops will not do anything about it when off duty, but at the very least then they should excuse themselves from the situation.

An officer should maintain the highest standards of honesty and integrity and should not associate with those who are involved in illegal endeavors!

Is he required to report them and take them to jail? If he's on duty...he had better do the job he's entrusted with!!

I would say that I agree with the comment that perhaps that officer shouldn't associate with aformentioed pot smokers , however , being police officer is after all , a job , what he does , not who he is . When he clocks out his job should be done for the day .

In Texas if a peace officer see or has knowledge of a law being broken they are required to react to stop it, if they dont, then they face charges and having their certification taken away. If it is their friend or someone off the street they still have to act.

Oh please! The cop probably smokes pot himself. Wearing the badge doesn't necessarily mean that an officer is a law abiding citizen. He's as human as you and me trying to make a living. I hate to generalize, but police officers are among the largest percentage of wife beaters.

Before I retired, I would leave a function if anything of the sort happened as I would be forced into doing something. I personally don't much acre if someone wants to smoke marijuana, but then I don't care much if people want to sniff glue. Just keep it away from me.

Apparently from your question you are a new cop let me answer it this way discretion is the better part of valor. you might find new friends. As you have more time on the job you will probably loose all your civilian friends and acquire nothing but cop friends, but that comes with the job. cops really don't trust anybody but cops
