I craft for preemies... making tiny baby infant clothing and knitting scarfs and blankets for baby's and homeless. There are a ton of volunteer groups listed in yahoo groups just search for what you would like to do.. If it is something local you would like to do, try contacting your local city organizations... like the library usually has posters, different city districts have park volunteer programs, one of our animal schelters lets volunteers come and walk the dogs and help clean kitty litter, some even let you take an animal home for a month untill it can be adopted. There are some volunteer firefighter programs too.. trying to get everything in that might help you loook for what you wanna do. I can't think of everything but, Local or by mail any volunteer charity work helps.

This is a good question, though a bit too general. Location and personal interests dictate what the answer to this question is! You do not provide any of that information here.
That said, some general places that you can find volunteer opportunities are as follows:
Schools.
Libraries.
Homeless Shelters.
Police Stations.
Hospitals.
Domestic Violence and Women's Shelters.
Animal Shelters.
There are also non-profit agencies for just about anything you can think of, from environmental issues, to domestic violence and women's issues, to teaching people to read, to helping children or the poor. Get online and go to a search engine, then type on "non profit agencies" and the city that you live in. That might help you find something, too!

Consider your interests and there is probably an organization closely associated with your personality.
Construction and Building: Habitat for Humanity
Animals: Local Zoo
S.P.C.A.
Local Animal Shelter
Kids: Big Brothers/Big Sisters
Boy Scouts of America
Girl Scouts of America
Homeless: Habiat for Humanity, again
Local Shelter
Hunger: Food Bank
Enviroment: Local Parks Department
and so on.
Find something that really matters to you and there is probably an organization that will be appropriate.

There are countless oppurtunities if you have the skill in any one of them. Try the United Nations Volunteers. You should have to have the will to spend enormous amount of your time sincerely and impart whatever you got so that the community where you serve will benefit from you.

It depends upon where you are, and what you like. Volunteering can be anywhere and anything. Besides the answers already given... if you like animals, check with your local zoo or animal shelters.

You can also go to the United Way Voluntary Action Center; they'll help you in a career-counseling kinda way to find the right match for you.
