There are many enhancement proyects, and macros or utilities, for OpenOffice. Go to www.openoffice.org and see by yourself if there's something that suits your needs (specifically, visit often groupware.openoffice.org to track advance on ooPIM). If you're on Windows, there are little free alternatives to Outlook; you may manage your mail and other stuff with Mozilla Thunderbird; in Linux, see Kontact and Evolution (built with the purpose of "cloning" MS Outlook).

Apparently the official word from the Open Office lot is that they are not going to re-invent the wheel by writing one when Mozilla offer suitable alternatives, ie Thunderbird, and Sunbird for calendar. These seem to be pretty stable, and of course, free.

Not really. You may find one, like thunderbird to do email and another one to do calendaring, but Open Office doesn't have one.
