ITS AND ARCHIPELAGO OF DIFFERENT ISLANDS.SOME HAVE SIMILIAR HISTORY AND YET SOME ARE SO DIFFERENT THAT WHAT MAKES THE CARIBBEAN SO SPECIAL EACH ISLAND HAS ITS OWN FLAVOUR ,STYLE AND CULTURE.
THE ATMOSPHERE IS GENERALLY WARM BOTH IN TEMPERATURE AND IN FRIENDLINESS.
NOT ALL THE ISLANDS ARE OVER COMMERCIALSED AND EXTREMELY TOURISTY PLE HAVE GET CAUGHT IN THE TRAP BECAUSE THEY DO NOT GIVE THE GENUINE PLACES THAT ARE NOT SO WELL KNOWN A CHANCE.THEY RUSH TO THE PLACES THAT OFFER THE SUN SAN AND SEA VACATIONS AS IF THAT IS ALL THE CARIBBEAN HAS TO OFFER.THERE ARE ISLANDS SUCH AS DOMINCA*(NOT TO BE MISTAKEN WITH THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC) THAT OFFERS ECOTOURISM AND HAS WON MANY AWARDS SUCH AS # 2 SPOT IN THE ATLANTIC BY READER'S CHOICE MAGAZINE FOR SNORKELLING AND SCUBA DIVING.
IM JSUT SAYING TEH CARIBBEAN HAS MORE TO OFFER THAN WHAT THE PLE ABOVE ARE SAYING U CAN EXPLORE ON UR OWN ON THE WEBSITES I WILL PROVIDE BELOW.ENJOY.

I've enjoyed my time in the Caribbean too. Since I've mostly been on cruise ships, I have experienced the crowded areas, and I would agree with the person that suggested finding a place that's a little off the beaten path.
As far as the poverty and begging goes, my experience is that you won't see much of that on the islands that used to be British colonies. We were recently in Guatemala and Belize (Carribean coast of Central America) -- people begged and haggled us so much when we tried to walk around that we went back to our ship and I was scared. But in Belize, it appeared that people didn't have a lot of money but there was no begging.

The Caribbean is so diverse. All the islands are different, some are lush and very tropical looking (St.Lucia = beautiful) and some are very dry and have cacti growing (Turks & Caicos)
I have been to most caribbean islands and all of them have wonderful beaches and the ocean is so nice and turquoise. My favorite islands from the recent years are probably St.Lucia & Turks and Caicos. Jamaica is also very tropical looking, but the crime is too high overthere and that's why I am not going anymore.
You should google each of the islands and read up on them. That's what I did before I went.

My general impression is that tourist resorts in the Caribbean are beautiful and your every need is met. When you step OUT of the resort and take a look around at the local culture, you are suddenly immersed in a poverty-ridden, entitlement society that expects handouts from you, the wealthy (whether you are or not) tourist. The land is beautiful, but except for the touristy areas, frequently not well taken care of.
Go to Hawaii. It's more expensive, but in this case, you really get what you pay for.

It depends on where you go. I have been to St. Kitts, Dominica, Turks and Cacios and Dominican Republic. Each island had its pro's and cons...but something they all had in common...warm weather!
