If you moved from NY to RI during 2006, then you will file part-year resident returns for both NY and RI. You would only need to pay NYC tax if you lived in NYC as well. On the NY return, you would only be subject to tax on income earned in NY. On the RI return, you would only be subject to tax on income earned in RI.

If your move did not happen until 2007, then you will need to file a full year resident NY return.

you will file multi-state returns. You will have your 1040, RI (resident return), and NY (part-year/non-resident). Yes, NYC gets their pound of flesh too - I recall that it's just part of the NY return (it's been a while since we did a NY return).

Each State which has a State Income Tax, if wages were earned while living there or while dwelling there, and the company(ies) show State info., you must file in both States. A tax professional can do multiple States with most Software packages. You can do it yourself now if you made under 50,000 for free on line, except for the States, it costs.

confident you may record them at separate situations, yet with many e-submitting application the State return piggybacks on the Federal return. in case you elect to e-record your Fed return now, do no longer finished the state return. additionally in case you e-record the federal return one by one you need to ought to paper record the state return. In some states it ought to no longer be a situation. although i understand that in case you paper record in some states your refund must be held up for some months.
