I want the letter h to act like the number 0.5, so i can add them together.

1 h = 0.5 days holiday

So I can work out how many days holiday I have left at work.

Yes - use a formula. In the cell that you want to display how many days you have left:

=(COUNTIF(A1:A12,"h")/2)

Assuming your range is cells A1:A12 and you are using an h to indicate the day.

Adjust as needed.

If you type the proper value into the cell (for instance, .5), then you can do the following to change the cell format:

Click "Format", then "Cells...". In the "Number" tab, scroll down to "Custom". In the "Type" box, enter the following line exactly:

#.# "h"

This will set the format to show the entered value to one decimal place, with the letter "h" after it.

This goes at the problem a little bit the reverse of what you stated. Instead of treating an "h" as a number, it will take the number you enter and display it with an "h" after it.
