If you run around shooting each other with it "for fun", it's a toy.

"Airsoft" guns shoot 6mm PLASTIC BB's at low velocity, the vast majority are in the 100-300fps range, and they are designed to be shot at others for "FUN" >airsoft guns are toys.

Pellet and BB guns shoot steel and lead at much higher velocity, they are not toys, big difference.

1,500fps? with an airsoft gun? I'm from Missouri, you're going to have to show me that one!!!

I have been shooting air guns for almost 50 years. I own a couple of the finest air rifles and one of the better air pistols ever built. 1250fps is very high velocity for an air rifle(with "normal" lead .177 pellets)

for info on, and the history of air guns

Later: I'm still waiting for that link to the 1500fps airsoft gun.

"at 300fps paintball can be lethal" - There must be 10's of thousands of dead paintballers. - Thank God my brother, nephew or myself have not been killed. It must be the bullet proof t-shirts we wear. LOL

First off what gun has a range of 300-1500 fps??? The best air guns are normally around 1100 or 1200 fps and those are the one pump kinds so you really can't have them shoot any slower. Also what is it shooting that normally determines how deadly something is. A BB going 1100 fps would do some harm but wouldn't kill a normal person, but a deer slug fired from a 12 gauge going 1100 fps would take down a 300 lbs deer easily. Another example of this is a BB going 300 fps would maybe leave a welt, however, with a compound bow an arrow is normally traveling around or just over 300 fps and it is powerful enough that it normally travels right through a deer and comes out the other side. So should a kid be able to buy something that shoots 300-1500fps? Personally I wouldn't want my kid going to the store and being able to buy something that could potentially harm or even kill someone. However, I would love to teach my kids (when I have kids) how to shoot a gun and take them with me hunting at a young age if they are interested in it, but that doesn't mean that they need to be able to buy their own gun at the store. The key is parent supervision, and teaching them responsibility and safe use, just like anything else. A car can be a deadly weapon thats why we don't let kids drive them till they are 16, and they have to take test to prove that they can use it safely.

I am a gun enthusiast. I feel we are presently over loaded with laws on or about guns, BUT!

A Nerf gun shoots a projectile. Even though it is harmless if hit by one, what does this teach a child?

I bought my grandson a shotgun that fires caps. After several days of thoughtful instruction, the first thing he wanted to do was shoot his sisters. The toy went back.

Honestly, a BB gun or pellet rifle that shoots 1500 fps could kill. If you are talking about a 2-? year old, NO! Again, it depends on training, attitude, and intelligence.

It is difficult to answer your question. I would need to say that without proper training, NO! Should a child be deprived of a toy pistol to play cowboy with, No. It may be part of getting it out of their system to shoot someone.

Anything that can project a projectile at 300-1500 fps is not a toy! Be it a sling shot, bow and arrow, spear, BB gun, a rock off the street, a knife, club, beer bottle, cannon ball, flower pot dropped off a balcony, baseball bat, chain, martial arts, straight pin, etc. Can be used as a weapon.

No gun that actually shoots is a toy. If you are buying a gun for someone get them proper training first. I have been qualified to train BB guns for the Boy Scouts. I've taught Cub Scouts as young as 6 or 7 to shoot. Knowing how to properly shoot a gun, even a BB gun should be something everyone should know before owning a firearm. Same thing with bows and arrows, which I was also qualified to teach. We also taught the safe way to use a knife for the boys to earn their whittling cards. Scouting has good programs and they make safety a priority in their activities. Don't let any kid handle a gun without training. It is not a toy.

why do you care? what is everyones deal with being "politicly correct"? first off i want to point out that if you are talking about airsoft, they shoot around 200-450fps. too shoot 1500 fps would most likely put the gun at over 12ft/lb of force, and it would be considered a firearm.

airsorft guns are considered "toy guns." the places that sell them even call them toys. http://www.airsoftextreme.com/content/ <<
EDIT: I agree that a bb gun or air rifle is not a toy, and shouldn't be treated as one. an airsoft gun that is designed to shoot people for fun, and not hurt, is a toy.

No guns are toys. I have a paintball gun and at 300 fps it can be lethal let alone a hard projectile from a gun. If a kid understand this I think it is ok for them to use but not buy. I think all firearms should be bought and owned by their parents.

No, absolutely not, in some states such as New York and Virgina they are actually considered firearms and, "Dangerous and deadly weapons". DO NOT buy one for a child under 16 and has no prior knowlage of weaponry, unless the child either hunts or shoots at a target range with a real gun (.22 or 20 guage).

Well let me tell you!! No gun is a toy!!!!!!! If the person that is gonna be shooting it is young they need to take a hunter safety or shooting class or have someone supervise them as they shoot at a firing range ,but no gun the has a projectile coming out should be considered a toy!!!

Is hunting a sport? To some, yes. If so, then the high powered rifle is a "toy".I've seen 30year olds I wouldn't walk into the woods armed with because they are reckless. On the other hand I've seen 5 year olds who are reasonably firearm safe. Who cares what your neighbor thinks, safty is the only influencing factor. With anything that is designed to kill the user must be responsible and educated

my airsoft gun goes 400 fps and only leaves a welt but i think if it fires anything 100 fps and up it is considered a hobby more than a toy.
