I am also owing a 3 years old German Shepherd. We feed him Pedigree Puppy since he was 2 months. My dog is a Champion of Dog shows. he is a very active dog.

But the same problem happens to me also. He does not want to eat Pedigree.

We consulted with 3 Vets and 2 Dog breeders. Everyone recommended Pedigree. It is the Perfect balanced food for every Dog. What we do is mix Pedigree with his regular food (Like rice & meat & vegis.). the amount of Pedigree is half of his food. and he find it Palatable.

I would advice u to mix Pedigree with his food, which he will find Palatable.
*) At first mix little amount of Pedigree with his regular food. Then slowly increase the amount of Pedigree.
*)Provide him Pedigree Puppy till15-18 months. it provides sufficient amount of Calcium and minerales for his bone.
*)after 18 months of his age Provide him Pedigree for Active adult dog.

Trust me, He will be fine.

I use Purina Puppy Chow. While this may not be the BEST food for my dogs (I have 2 GSDs), it is not bad for them, and better than most of the other "usual" foods. Be sure to stay away from colorful dog foods though. If you grab a handful of your dogfood and your hand becomes very greasy, you should probably switch. Your dogfood can affect your dog's coat too. A healthy shiny coat is a result of a good diet. Poor dogfood can cause mangy coats as well as dandruff. IMO, the best dog food out there is Bill Jack. But, like I said before, I use Puppy Chow. (I can't afford Bill Jack with 2 dogs). PC works just fine.

Nutrience, Trail Blazer, Field Trial and Trail Blazer i have never even heard of so i would say they are probibly not very good.

i have heard of Pro Pac and Pedigree. but dont like them.

i would try pro plan, which you can get at petsmart or a vet clinic that carries purina.

talk with youre vet about the scratching, it could be food allergy or just dry skin because its winter. but depending on what your vet says you may need to switch her/him to lamb and rice formula.

also please dont encorage her to eat with canned food its hard to wean them off sometimes and its bad for their teeth.

also my dog should be eating 3/4 a cup twice a day and she only eats 1/4 a cup twice a day and sometimes she wont even finish that. some dogs are just grazers as youre vet will tell you. dogs will eat when they get hungery.

I couldn't find any info on "Trail Blazer" or "Field Trial". Out of the remaining 3, Nutrience seems to be the best though it does have corn in it (third ingredient).

I second the comments that said your dog should be on a fish oil supplement, and also the one saying that you should try a grain-free food. Another consideration is that your dog may be allergic to storage mites found in dry food in which case you will need to switch to canned, raw, or home cooked.

There are a number of grain-free dry foods on the market, including Innova Evo and Solid Gold Barking at the Moon. I would reccomend the latter as Solid Gold has the best packaging. Your local pet store may be able to order it for you if they don't carry it.

You should be able to easily find information on how to create a balanced home cooked diet on the web or talk to your vet. Before finding a commerical food that my dog tolerated, we fed her a home cooked diet of eggs, cottage cheese, potatoes, and vegetables (carrots, peas, broccoli, etc).

Here's an article about dog food. I really don't like Pedigree - there's a lot of baaaad stuff in there.

Also, look into using a salmon oil supplement to help with the scratching:

You should look into NUTRO which is highly recommended by many breeders. You can also go to their website and they will send you a coupon book and information and occasionally a coupon through the mail. If you buy from Petco with their club card, you'll get a free bag after 10 buys.

"Fillers" in dog food is BAD, also anything that says "By-products" are just plain wrong. "Chicken by-products are chicken parts, such as heads, feet and intestines."

"Does your food contain chemical preservatives?
No, our foods are naturally preserved with Vitamin E. We never use chemicals like BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, propyl gallate or sodium hexametaphosphate."

"Feed Less, Shed Less, Clean Up Less
High-quality natural ingredients are more nutritious, so you can feed less volume than other foods. Unlike supermarket brands, MAX contains only the highest quality ingredients, like chemical-free beef, lamb, and chicken - no chicken by-products. All our formulas are all natural with added vitamins and minerals. MAX uses only highly digestible rice and wheat - no ground corn. This means higher digestibility and lower stool volume. More nutrition goes into your dog; less waste goes into your backyard! High levels of important linoleic acid help to condition your dog's skin and coat. Your dog will experience less shedding, less itching, and less scratching with MAX. "

Scratching is probably a sign of your dog being allergic to a grain in the kibble. All the kibble you listed has grains in the ingredients. There are several grainless kibble brands available. Timberwolf Organics,SolidGold,Innova....all offer a grainless variety of kibble. You will NOT find high quality pet foods in grocery stores or "big box" retail stores.Good luck!

Nutrience sounds good, I looked that one up. If I were you I would look these up on the web and see if the ingredients are listed on the company's website, if they are that is a good sign. You don't want to buy anything with animal by-products in it, that would kind of make your dog a "cannibal" if that is possible... Good luck, and feed your pup the best, she deserves it.... In case you were curious I feed my dogs Nutro and they are always full of energy, healthy, in good shape, and their fur/skin/nails are super healthy.

There are a lot more foods out there than what you listed, your best bet since what I would suggest as my top 3 picks are not easy to find, go to walmart and buy some PURINA ONE PUPPY, also for the itching until you get the diet changed is vit e or fish oil, both available at walmart. Also get just a few cans of wet food and mix ONLY 1tbs in w/ the dry to coat it.

do you daily go outside and enjoy food? so let him also enjoy home made food. once in a while it is ok. But home made food should be without spices and chillies.
