Well... I am not to fond of the hotel life...I have hardly ever stayed in one. But when I did I really didn't know of a shampoo girl or the door man. It was called room service or whatever. but if the hotel was to have something like that I wouldn't think of even tipping to shampoo girl if I have my own and I could have my boyfriend open the door for me... even if he wasn't to open the door I still would never tip him..

Rarely if ever stay at a hotel that has a doorman and neither do I have a shampoo girl, but what I know about tipping is that there are great local differences! Especially if you're talking about international travel. Look it up in the travel guide or the lonely planet website probably gives advice too. That'll prevent you from over- or under-tipping, both of which can be seen as offensive.

Hotel door man - should be tipped once upon checking out. However, if you live in a hotel it's appropriate to provide one nice tip at the holidays.
Shampoo girl - should be tipped out of the hairdresser's tip.

The first time you greet the doorman give him five bucks. Then that is it for the stay. You want to have the best hotel stay ever. Tip the front desk agent. They can give you the best stay ever, they can make or brake your entire stay, and yet they hardly ever get a tip. I am telling you, you give them five, ten bucks from the start. You will be in a suite or best room available. You will get great service and wonderful recommendations, they will treat you like a king.
They work at one of the most stressful jobs in America, and get very little respect or extra for it. Tip them, and you will be the star of the hotel.

The doorman should be tipped once at the beginning of your stay - equal to $1 for each day of your stay.
The housekeeper should be tipped directly the first time she takes care of your room. That will ensure she will pay special attention to your needs during your stay. It should be about $5 per day of your expected stay.
Room service should get a percentage of the cost of the meal - usually 15% - at the time of delivery per meal. (The one-time only doesn't usually apply here because you may never see the same one twice.)
10% of the fare to the taxi driver. 15% if he took a short cut. 20% if he gave you tips enroute on how to save money, best places to eat, etc.
Never heard of a shampoo girl. I would think the hairdresser would give her a percentage of her tips.

No, I do not think someone should be tipped EVERY time they open a door for you; if that is your job, you are performing an act of service as your JOB.
I feel tipping in all areas, is based off of what you the client/customer feels is a worthy job.

In my limited experience I have given a door man a one-time large tip at the beginning, relative to my stay, and his thanks is reflected in the service for the rest of my stay...
As far as the shampoo "girl" I would say a small monetary thanks is sufficient. My stylist washes my hair herself, so I've never experienced this ....
Good Question.

No. All this tipping for every little thing is getting out of hand. It is okay to tip. Just not everyone for every little thing. Basically a tip is a thank-you for a job well done. If the job isn't to your satisfaction then don't tip.

I never tip them unless they go out of their way to help me.The shampoo girl is also the hair stylist in my shop. She does everything to my hair herself, plus she owns the shop....So I usually tip her 10 dollars plus my bill.
