Owls are not supposed to be kept as pets. Leave them in the wild and get a parakeet. Parakeet are much more domesticated and you'l be happier with your pet!

Owls are wild animals and it is illegal to keep them as pets. If you would like to learn more about owls, raptors, and other wild animals, volunteer for a local raptor sanctuary or wildlife rehabilitation organization. They often allow minors to volunteer, and may provide a mentor if you are too young.
You may also want to read Bernd Heinrich's "An Owl in the House" or "One Man's Owl." He rehabilitates an injured young owl and releases it to the wild - after 3 *years* of DAILY attention. He provides an amazing observational story of the bird, although he tends to smooth over the "ugly" bits -- the fact that the bird is imprinted on him, the injuries the owl inflicts, the fact he has to find and feed it several live or recently dead animals a day, the owl's aggressiveness, the poop all over the place--but the book gives you an idea of the extreme patience and responsibility that animal rehabilitation requires.

If I was your mom and read this thread I wouldn't let you have a snake at all. All the talk about parasites and diseases would make me worry about you! You don't say where you live so it's hard to know what might be out there in the wild, but it's a pretty safe bet that if you live in Alaska or Hawaii you're going to have to buy your snake; if you live in the Lower 48 there will be some snakes around, but I agree that it's not a good idea (even if it is legal) to take snakes from the wild. The biggest problem with parasite load in wild-caught snakes is with external parasites like mites and ticks. If all the snakes in the wild were infested with internal parasites there wouldn't be any snakes in the wild. Tell your mom that you don't want to take a snake out of the wild and/or that the kind of snake you want is not found in your area and can only be obtained by purchasing it. That may well be true and spare you the problem with lying. She might be even be impressed with your conservation ethic. If you're going to look for snakes in the wild, get a current field guide for your state. Roger Conant's Field Guide was published many years ago and many of the areas he hunted are now parking lots and condos. Also, Michael has it right about replacing any boards or rocks you may turn over looking for snakes. Years ago Karl Kauffeld wrote that "The snake's worst enemy is its best friend." He was talking about us. He mentioned that he found some areas that used to have good snake populations, but collectors had gone to the area, turned over all the cover available and the snakes disappeared. If you destroy the snakes' hiding places you destroy the snakes. Don't worry about the venomous snakes. You're looking for a first snake and don't need to fool with a "hot" species. Good luck.

Just so we're clear, um...Minerva...
You are aware that Owls don't actually carry mail back and forth, right? I'm just saying...if that's why you want one, it's not quite the same as Hedwig.
Owls are predators, and are very much not meant to be kept as pets. The ones you see in Harry Potter, most of them are animatronic. The ones that aren't, are usually rescues or specifically bred to do what they do, but the vast majority of them are animatronic.
I agree with the others who are telling you to get a budgie or something smaller like that. You can even name it Hedwig if you want...

Don't buy one, if you really want to own an owl, you will need to learn how to take care of one, these birds cannot be kept like budgies, you can't just shove them in a cage and feed them trill. they need specialist housing, specialist diet, specialst equipment (jesses, anklets, glove) and they need to be flown daily. It's not like in harry potter when you let them fly around and they just come back when you want it to. they have to be dieted so they want to come back to you for food, they also have to be imprinted, so you have to rear one from a baby , CORRECTLY, other wise they can become agressive, stressed and unmanagable.
Just remember, some large owls are capable of killing cats and small dogs.
If you are really interested in owning an owl, go on a falconry course, in England it is recomended that you go on at least a five day falconry course, in the U.S. you have to complete a one year aprenticeship before you can obtain your falconry licence.
We offer falconry tuition in the U.K. involving owls and hawks.

Be grateful your mom is sensible. Don't be fooled by what you read in Harry Potter, owls make terrible pets. They should only be kept by specialist keepers in a proper environment. Really, your mom is right it's a huge mistake.

Owls are wild animals, not pets. If you want a bird, get one more suitable to living inside a house, like a parakeet.

you cant own an owl
if you want a big bird buy a parrot or cockatoo they have more color but also need tons of attention. if you do want a parrot try going through mikaboo (they have a website) they have tons of rescue birds and arent as expensive as going through a pet store.
