I spent 2 months in Ohau when my husband was on temporay duty. I took the bus everywhere! I've actually found the bus system on Ohau to be one of the best around. I'm more comfortable taking the bus in Honolulu/Waikiki than I am driving there. I found the bus to be rather clean, not smelly, but the air conditioning can leave you with goose bumps.

In Honolulu/Waikiki you'll find a lot of other tourists on the bus, and the buses run quite frequently. You can pay $2 per ride with one free transfer, or buy a 4 day pass for $20. If you're going to be in Ohau longer, and plan to ride the bus frequently then a monthly bus pass is a good option at $40.

The bus schedules/routes are farily easy to understand and the drivers are usually very friendly and willing to help you figure out which bus you need to take and what stop you need to get off at. I had one driver who was very kind to me. I was boarding with 3 kids and fumbling with my money. When I finally got all my money together to pay, he told me not to worry about it. When we got off at our stop he wished us a good evening and told us to have fun during our visit.

The other great thing about the bus system in Ohau is that you can call 1-800-848-5555 and tell them where you are and where you'd like to go and they will get you there in one transfer. I did this a couple of times while I was there.

You can find all the info you need about the bus in Ohau at www.thebus.org

I found the bus to be a great way to explore Honolulu. I was able to look out the windows and see all sorts of things. If I wasn't in a hurry I could get off, explore a little, then get back on. I was able to ride through China town and see a whole side of Honolulu that I didn't know existed. I was able to talk to locals and discover places that aren't well known to tourists and find out about local events that tourists may not be aware of.

From what I could tell, the trollies are operated by DFS Galleria and Hilo Hattie. They go between the hotels picking up passengers and dropping them off at the store. They don't run as often as the bus and the stops are fewer (only at certian hotels) and farther in between (the trollies usually run every 20 minutes vs. the bus which runs every 6-10 depending on time of day and route). The DFS and Hilo Hattie trollies are free since they're operated by stores who want to get people in.

There is another trolley company in Ohau, but it only runs for a Japanese company and you must have a special pass from that company to ride. While I was there I never saw a non-Japanese passenger on that trolley.

The trolley is free, and lots of fun. But the buses can go around the whole island in 2-3 hours for a $1, and bus transfers.

The trolley is just a cutesy little tourist thing that goes around Waikiki. The driver does tell you about stuff, though and it is fun. But if you don't rent a car, the only way to see the rest of the island is by bus.The buses will take you anywhere on Oahu-- and they're no worse (and maybe even better) than riding buses elsewhere. True, you will be hanging with the 'humbler' class of people--- but they can be really amusing and interesting. and all the school kids ride 'da bus'

If you're staying around the "shopping district" the trolley is pretty fun (no windows on the bus) but the bus takes you all around the island. Be aware, they are extremely cold (air conditioned) and you will freeze your but off if you don't bring a long sleeve.
