I was always told that this was a really painful place to have a tattoo so blokes used to have them done to show how hard they were. Don't know why it was a swallow though

Every other bloke over the age of 60 has these tattoos so you shouldn't have many problems finding a piccy!

I remember my uncle had one of these on both hands where you describe. He was Scottish but did serve in Malaysia in the 1950's

i no lots of people that have these done i think there was no particaular reason just a 'fashion' item as we would say. but i might b very wrong.
