In ancient Egyptian times monkeys were godlike creatures just like cats were. The Egyptians used to dress them up in all sorts of robes and put brass cups over their testicles.
One year there was an extremely cold winter and alot of the monkeys froze to death. The apparent reason for this according to the Egyptians was that the brass cups over their balls got frozen faster, and that if they did not have brass cups on their balls they most likely wouldnt have died. Another reason the Egyptains thought this is because all the monkeys balls had fallen off when they were found dead.
Hence the fraze "Freezing the balls off a brass monkey!"

Well shiver me timbers young bucko your phrase was well known in the days of sailing ships with cannons along each side. With the ship heaving up and down you could not have cannon balls rolling around so beside each cannon was a BRASS tray with a raised lip around the edge called a MONKEY. On this tray were placed 16 iron cannon balls topped with another 9 then again with 4 and one on top in a pyramid. However, every schoolboy now-a-days knows that in freezing cold weather Brass contracts quicker than Iron. So the Brass Monkey contracted and the iron cannon balls fell off the tray. Thus Freezing the Balls off of the Brass Monkey.

On the "men of war" during the 18/19 century the powder for cannon balls was distributed by agile young boys on the gun deck who were nicknamed monkeys. A brass distributor of powder was designed where the iron cannon balls were arranged around on a trough underneath pipes which dispensed the powder. In cold climates brass contracts faster than iron and so the balls fell off. Hence "Cold enough to freeze the balls of a brass monkey".
This phrase refers neither to simians nor gonads
Hope this helps

iit came from the navy. It is about a plate (monkey) that holds the cannon balls before being loaded into the cannon. on cold days the plate would contract and the balls would fall off.

I had heard it was cannons, but I stopped using this phrase because of the looks I was getting. Many people think it's similar to the old witch's tit phrase. Silly Earth people.
