I have a wisdom tooth that needs to come out, unfortunately for me the needles the dentist give you to numb the area while a tooth extraction is taking place DONT WORK. I have never been in so much pain when having a previous moler out, and this has put me off my dentist, i warned him it wouldnt work but he carried on regardless. I would rather not go back to my dentist if possible, i would much rather see my gp. any thoughts??

No. You need to make an appointment with an oral surgeon. Your GP will tell you to do that exact same thing. They will not see you for dental issues. Check with your insurance and contact an oral surgeon in your network. If you need to be knocked out to have it pulled (I do too) insurance will usually cover half. If no insurance, then oral surgeons can work out a payment plan with you. Just get in there so they can get it out ASAP.

Most likely, there isn't a "hospital dentist". There aren't in any of the local hospitals where I live, anyway.

You'll probably be sent to an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth, especially if you don't want to have a simple extraction.

What you need to do is be totally honest with whoever performs the procedure. Different meds effect everyone differently. My dentist joked that he gave me enough novacaine to kill a horse once when I was having a root canal done. If your dentist (or oral surgeon) knows you're hard to numb, he or she can plan accordingly, and can also help to put you at ease.

I would suggest going to your dentist, just because he's better equipped to make suggestions, than your general practitioner. You'd have to have a consult either way. Let him know your fears and that you did NOT appreciate the molar-pulling incident. Ask him specifically if he can recommend an oral surgeon who could possibly give you iv sedation through the procedure. If they give you that, yeah, you won't feel a thing. It's not uncommon for people to have iv sedation before going.

You can also request a sedative before you go to help calm you down. Sometimes, nerves (the jittery kind) can effect nerves (the neurological kind), so your fear of feeling it all may be actually causing you to feel it.

But, yeah, even if you aren't keen on your dentist, if you go see your general practitioner, he or she may tell you to see a dentist. If you see your dentist, he or she may suggest you go see an oral surgeon.

Good luck to you!

See if you Dentist will at the very least cal you in an antibiotic, it wil make the infection that is causing the pain to go away. I have been through enough toothaches and seen enough from a nurse's standpoint that I have finally figured out what works for a toothache ( Even wisdom teeth)Hope it helps sweetie. 1. rinse your mouth vigorously on the tooth that hurts swish hard , with the water being as hot as you can stand it. ( It will almost IMMEDIATELY relieve the pain) 2. Take 2 -200mg Ibuprofen, and 1- 500 mgAcetaminophene. The motrin is an anti-inflammitory and will cut down on the swelling ( the swelling of the blood vessels around the tooth is what makes it throb and hurt so bad) The Tylenol wil cut the pain down even more. These 2 together work better than vicodin or lortab because they actually have a function instead of just making you pass out. Warm compresses on the side of your face in which the tooth is what cut down on the external swelling and will help to not alter your outer facial expression. I am so sorry that you are going through this honey.

Your dentist can refer you to the hospital...most dentists will do this when extracting wisdom teeth as it requires a general anyway.

A doctor will just tell you to see a dentist. It is a dentist that can refer you to hospital. My husband had a similar problem and had to go to a dentist for referral xxxx

No a GP can not arrange an appoinment for you. This will have to be done by a dentist. Go find a new dentist if you find your current one unsympathetic.

Put a teabag on the area for relief and take motrin.
