I'm not sure if I really understand the question, but it is important for a civil engineer to be at least familiar with other engineering disciplines because there are rarely projects in the real world that exclusively rely on the civil engineering discipline. More likely, a civil engineer will have to work alongside with mechanical, geotechnical, and electrical engineers in a project. Understanding their role in a project helps you better understand your own role in the project.

Most of the studies I prepare or require have to do with traffic, drainage and soils. Each of these are required for different projects because of the variability of these phenomena between sites. Each site will usually have different soils, drainage characteristics and traffic patterns. Thus one needs a study for each site to address these issues and incorporate necessary measures in the site design.
