You HAVE to visit the Holocaust museum. But get tickets ahead of time (they are free). They tell you what time to show up so you don't have to wait 4 hours to get in.
Seriously, when I heard they were building it I thought "who the heck would want to see that!" but it is really very well done. Best presentation of history I've ever seen. You'll be affected forever.
Call your congressperson's office and ask if you can visit their office or even have breakfast with him/her at the Capitol cafeteria. It's worth a try. They do it a lot.
If you want a unique and exotic dining experience go to the Marrakesh (617 New York Avenue Northwest, 202.393.9393 for reservations). Dimly lit and mysterious, to the point of being a bit freaky, lots of good Morrocan food, eat roast chicken with your hands, copious amounts of wine included in price, and belly dancers.

If you are interested in museums then DC is the town for you.
All of the Smithsonian Museums are free of charge, and most are on the National Mall.
Be prepared to stand in line on busy days due to security screenings.
The new Air & Space Museum (Udvar-Hazy Center) is out by Dulles Airport and has no admission fee but they do charge $12.oo per car for parking. There is a shuttle bus from the mall but they charge a fee per person.
This museum is excellent and if you have any interest in aviation or space travel this is a must see. If you have just a passing interest in aviation then the National Air & Space on the Mall will be fine.
The Museum of the American Indian is also an excellent stop while you're here.
Also a trip into Virginia to vist Mount Vernon is worthwhile.
George Washington's home is an excellent place to spend an afternoon. There are walking tours that will take you all through the grounds.
The links below will give you the rundown on all of the museums in detail.

Day 1: DC/non-mall areas: Holocaust Museum/Spy Museum/Zoo/National Cathedral
Day 2: Northern Virginia: Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial/Arlington Cemetary/Mount Vernon
Day 3: Mall Crawl (must start early to see it all): Abe/Vietnam&Korea/WW2/Washington Monument/White House/Smithsonian.
Alternatively Day 1: Northern VA and Days 2 & 3 in DC on the Mall, although I do recommend seeing the National Cathedral.
Don't forget to bring your most comfortable shoes.

See as many of the Smithsonian museums as possible (their website is www.si.edu so you can read about which ones you're interested in). Also the National Zoo, if you're interested and the weather's good. It's one of the top 3 or 4 zoos in the country. Also the monuments and memorials - Vietnam and Korean War memorials, FDR Memorial, and especially the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. If you can tour the U.S Capital building then do that as well, although I haven't been there in years so I'm not sure how easy it is to do that with all the security now.

If you want to go to the white house, I wouldn't bother, you get to see 3 rooms in about 15 minutes, most of which is spent in security, I suggest going to the white house visitors center. If you're asking about good places to go then go to: library of congress, washington monument, Air and Space Smithsoian (they have some stuff from the american history since its closed until 2008) National art gallery. Those are the best things, What I suggest is you look up online about different things in Washington and decide things that you deffinately want to do and then a list of things you would like to do if you have more time, something is closed etc.
Hope you have a great time

I can spend a week alone in Washington DC! I would definetly say about a good three weeks for everything. There is so much to see in NYC and Washington DC, and then you've got the Boston Aquarium and everything else! That would be such a blast, have fun!

Spend one whole day at the Air & Space museum. The several war memorials are worth seeing. Then the museums on the mall. Parking is a problem so I recommend you take the tram into DC

The only thing I didn't see listed in the other postings was the US Botanic Garden. It is a nice place to relax during a busy day of sightseeing. It is near the capital building.

Definitely the Smithsonian Museum and there is another one close by. But I forget its name. But they are both beautiful. Try out the Metro as well, the restaurants down there are tasty.
