I want to find a pet suitable for home life. I hear Shih Tzus are pretty good companions, that they're really nice and a lot of fun to be around. But also that they're high maintenance. What do you think?

They aren't high maintenance if you keep up with them. Either learn to groom them yourself - but then you would have to buy all the equipment. Or better yet, take them to the groomer once a month or every six weeks for a bath & trim.
Their hair can grow quite long - so you don't want to neglect it.
In between groomings, I would recommend giving your shih tzu a weekly bath at home - as you should with all dogs anyway.
This will keep him clean & keep his skin & coat healthy. And he wont be a stinky little thing & you will like him a lot better!
As for their temperaments - they can't be beat! They are WONDERFUL, sweet, calm little dogs. Much like a big dog in a small dog body.

I have a Shih Tzu and she is a wonderful companion! She is smart, funny, and always puts a smile on my face!

They can be high maintenance because of the grooming required, but they are also beautiful when shaved! When my Shih Tzu gets shaved (generally in hot weather) she feels like velvet!

She has never met a person or animal that she didn't like!

Good luck!

Having had Irish Setters, German Shepherds, Goldens, chihuahuas and Shih Tzus, I'd have to say that all have their attributes, but it was the shih tzus that truly stole my heart. They are sweet, smart and very laid back little dogs.
As far as high maintenance goes, they do have to be groomed regularly (about every six weeks) and both mine had knee surgery. For the most part they were healthy normal dogs. One lived to be 17 and the other 19.
They are certainly a breed I would recommend without hesitation!

in case you're able to desire to ask on right here the respond isn't any. Passing CGC would not lead them to breeding fabric. As mentioned if that grow to be the case any MUTT could be breeding fabric. No conformation titles? No assessment by skill of a great shih tzu? No experience your self for some years with the breed, exhibiting and breeding?then you definately are not qualified to assert in the event that they're breeding fabric or no longer. What precisely do you should end from this breeding. Breeding to furnish your self and your man or woman family members with puppies is on no account a sturdy reason to reproduce do no longer care HOW great a pair of canine they're. have you ever studied their pedigrees interior and out? What wellbeing clearances have that they had?

I recently got a 3 month old shih tzu and he is my baby. He is so cute! He loves to be around people and other dogs. He is very gentle and quiet. But then when he is hyper he likes to play.
My puppy is stil very young so he needs alot of attention. Last night I was petting my roommate's puppy and my pookie got so jealous that he started crying and jumping all over the place.
He does get dirty fast because of the long hair. I can't wait to wash him! but they told me that I can only wash him once every 2 weeks.

I have a 3 month puppie, named Kirby. He is the sweetest, funniest, loving dog we have ever had. He is such a sweetheart. Me and my husband adore him. He is a blast to play with as well. If your looking for a sweet, loving breed I'd highly recommend this breed. They love alottttttttttt of attention, so be prepared to spend alot of time playing with yours.
