i say you cant. i thought i could with my ex, and then he started dating another girl and i couldn't stand being around them or hearing about it. i guess i clearly still had feelings for him.

I am best friends with my first love. we talk about everything and when we don't talk for a while and then finally do it's like no time has pasted at all. We were very much in love, maybe puppy love but there was love and now we're great friends. You have to be mature and set down extremely clear lines for a realationship to work in that situation.

There are very few absolutes in this world. While occasionally two people who were formerly in love etc can continue their friendship in a platonic way, for the most part it is generally likely to lead to many problems with respect to either one beginning a new and healthy monogamous relationship with someone else.
