Long enough to catch the hair to braid, and the braid will hold without coming undone. Some say around 1/2-1 inch. Depending on the braider. Some braiders can braid really short hair and the braids will not come undone.

Two to three inches long of hair should be good enough for the stylist to braid it nicely for you.
