Absolutely ! First, never just swat the puppy with a magazine or a rolled up newspaper. The only result you are guaranteed to get is a confused dog that hates magazines and newspaper. The key in successfully training a dog is to always be consistent. For instance, always walk the dog on one the same side of you. I chose left and every time (and no matter where we went) he was on my left side.Today, even without a leash, he will return to my left side. For your situation you must use simple voice commands. "NO !", is the optimal word here and you need to say it (not yell) it loudly and recognizably stern and without breaking character if the dog looks sad or frightened. This is what you want to accomplish. With every activity that your friend chooses that is not pleasing to you, use this command. " NO ! ", and simply walk away. In the blink of an eye, the dog will understand that he didn't enjoy that little outburst from you and even if he still doesn't understand, your consistency will show him which areas to avoid so he can get back to the loving part which is what he really likes.I would also like to add that to praise the dog when he follows your commands, is equally important to a strong communication. I wouldn't trade my dog for great wealth and we communicate very well. As a matter of fact, I sometimes find myself wondering if he isn't actually a little boy wearing a dogs costume. Good Luck.

I agree with DP...have stuff handy to basically shove in his mouth. When he bites, a firm "NO" then put the toy or chewy in his mouth and say "good boy." Repeat every time he bites...he's just learning so it will take a little while, but yes, they learn very quickly.
FYI I use Nylabone Puppy bones...they are designed for teething dogs & each of my dogs, from older to puppies have loved them.
And NEVER hit the puppy with anything...this will teach him nothing and could very well make him aggressive.

Puppies explore with their mouths... When he is doing this, firmly tell him "NO" and push him away. After a few times of doing this, he will realize that this is unacceptable behavior. You have to remember to keep your place as the pack leader and if this means putting him down (getting on top of him) to correct the things he is doing wrong, so be it. Training a puppy takes alot of hard work and consistency

2 things.
1: Yelp like a little girl when he bites you, call him a jerk or something and turn your back on him. He'll learn that his teeth on your skin may be hurting you and puts a quick end to fun time. (later you can work on teaching soft biting so he knows how to use proper bite pressure when playing etc)
2: Shove a chew toy in its mouth when he bites on anything else you don't want him to, eventually he'll want to avoid the process of being told no and he'll just start to choose the toy on his own.

No need to hit your pup or get wound up about his behavior. He's doing this to explore his world - and it's not difficult to teach him what's good behavior and what's not, as long as all members of your family are consistent.
p.s. It's been scientifically proven that using a rolled - up newspaper only works if you use it on your OWN head. HTH.

NO hitting please no news papers rolled up, try clapping your hands together when he bites you and saying NO in a stern voice, and give him a toy that will help him teeth because that's what he is doing is teething.

What I do is say no but then give him something he can chew on. They learn pretty quick and it is safe.

I like to use the biscuit. Make him wait by telling her "NO" and then when you give it tell him good boy.
