I want to go to Europe over summer and I was wondering how far in advance I should apply for my passport. (Am 18 and never needed one before.) I know the smartest answer is to just get it now but I don't have a lot of spendable cash.

It takes 6 - 8 weeks using the normal process and this can be done in many local locations (post offices, etc.). However, if you are traveling within 2 weeks or need it to apply for VISAs for other countries where you will be traveling you can pay an extra fee to get same day service. You will need proof that you are traveling (tickets, or itineraries). You would need to get an appointment at one of the regional offices that provide expedited service (can do this over the phone using an automated system) and then go in person with all your documents. You can pay with check or credit/debit card. Check the link to get all the information as well as the forms that you will need to complete.

I got mine about 5 years ago and it took close to a month (I think like 3-4 weeks). It was at about this time of year as well... I think the end of January or maybe first week in February. My guess is that with the new passport regulations for going to Canada and the Caribbean then there will be more people applying for them now so if anything it will probably take longer - I heard on the news that there are lines at some passport application centers. You can also pay extra to get a "rush" on it so they will send it faster... but of course that would be silly.

Wow, only three weeks? That seems very fast. Last summer, the waiting periods were a lot longer than the Passport Agency was admitting to. Six months wasn't too long. You could pay extra for "expedited" processing, but even that was taking a long time. Don't know where you'll be dropping off your application, but they might be a good source of info. Either the post office or the Passport Agency who'll actually be doing the work. But you may get a sincere, "I dunno" for an honest answer.
