Well anytime you put anything in your mouth you get salaiva, ever chew on a pen or a pencil. The Indians would put a small rock in their mouth when they were thirsty. It's like the cooling system in your car it keeps the mouth teeth and gums moist, without it your teeth would fall out in a few years. I would think the direct reason is the smoke irritates your mouth and saliva is the body's reaction.
